The Birth of the Atlanta Doula Collective
Serving as a dispatcher for a newly formed On-Call Doula Service, Sekesa aimed to offer laboring women in hospitals the support of a volunteer Doula. The program proved successful, assisting over 100 families in its inaugural year and providing entry-level Doulas with valuable experience and certification opportunities.
In 2019, the collective evolved into the Atlanta Doula Collective (ADC), a non-profit organization. They created the 2-1-2 Service Model, consisting of two prenatal visits, support during birth, and two postpartum visits. Additionally, the ADC introduced continuing education trainings to empower Doulas in enhancing their skillsets. This initiative addresses a professional development gap identified by Sekesa within the Doula profession.

Advancing Training, Support, and Expansion
Recognizing a critical gap in continuing education for Doulas, ADC launched specialized training programs to strengthen skills, offer certification opportunities, and support long-term career sustainability. Today, ADC remains committed to bridging the Black maternal health gap by providing affordable labor support for Black families across Metro Atlanta while ensuring the growth and vitality of the perinatal workforce for lasting change.
As part of our continued efforts, we launched the Georgia Black Doula Network Directory, the largest directory of doulas in Georgia, focused on serving Black and Indigenous communities in healthcare deserts, GBDN aims to grow the local doula workforce and promote its long-term sustainability.
